I arrive home before one o’clock and find Zach or Zara have left the exterior lights on for me. They’ve left a light on in the kitchen as well, but I hope that’s because they don’t want me tripping over things and waking them up, not because they’re still awake.

I pull my vehicle into its regular parking space, close the garage door behind me, and give myself a pep-talk to work up the courage to go inside. I’m utterly exhausted from the events of the evening. The crowd, the toxins, the vomiting—but most definitely the encounter with Kevin.

Walking through the door—which I took a full twenty seconds to turn the knob so it wouldn’t make a noise—I am rewarded by an empty, sparsely lit kitchen.

I make a beeline for my bedroom as silently as possible, and once again Bond is there to greet me from Isla’s bedroom doorway. His glare is so human like, I can guess what he’s thinking. I issue a silent plea, trying to tell him I won’t wake Isla. He understands, turning back into her bedroom to resume his sleep-guarding duties.

When I strip off my dress, boots, and bra, exchanging them for tie-dye pyjama shorts and a white T-shirt, I crawl into bed, grateful Zach and Zara weren’t awake to grill me upon my return. Settling into my plush mattress, I wonder why. Do they not care anymore if I arrive home safely? Have I made them so angry, they don’t love me anymore?

It seems the only success I have in this life is driving away people who love me.

I don’t deserve their love, anyway.
